Ashfaq Ashfaq Hossain

I am presently working as a Research Assistant in the VLSI Design Group at Beckman Institute located in University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). After completing my undergraduate work in Electrical Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology , I pursued and obtained MS degree in Computer Engineering from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale . As a continuation of my graduate studies, I joined the Department of Computer Science at UIUC. After taking PhD Comprehensive Examinations in Computer Architecture, Computer Hardware and Numerical Analysis, I cleared the Oral Qualifying Examination of the department to become a full candidate for PhD. The topic of this examination was MPEG Video Over Computer Networks.

My academic interests are: High Performance Computer Systems, Memory Hierarchies, Multimedia Video Compression and Transmission over ATM/non-ATM networks.

My academic advisor is Prof. Sung Mo Kang .

Some of the interesting Graduate Courses that I have taken are listed here . You can click here for more personal information. The personal page is Applet enriched.

My professional Resume is available at the bottom of this page.

iPOINT Video Server Development

My current involvement is to develop code for iPOINT Video Server and Client. The present implementation uses UDP/IP over ATM protocol. The modified version will use raw ATM mode with concurrent data receive and display threads, supported by Solaris 2.3 or later versions. Click here for more information on the Video Server/Client.

    Summer Experience

Summer 1996: I am working for Hardware Evaluation and Verification Group at Tandem Computers Inc in Cupertino, California. I am investigating ServerNet performance for Video Server and Client applcations along with the ATM interface of the ServerNet card. This is my second consecutive summer at Tandem.

Summer 1995: I worked as an intern at Tandem Computers Inc. The responsibilities included developing a Protocol for communication between Video Server and Client, writing Video Server code in Tandem Himalaya Servers. I also contributed towards the development of the Client code for Tandem machines.

Spring 1994: I taught two courses in computer science at freshman and sophomore years at North South University, Dhaka. These were C programming courses at introductory and advanced levels. I was also responsible for revising the undergraduate curriculum of Computer Science at NSU.

Summer 1993: I taught introductory computer programming course (C language) for freshman students in computer science.
