FPGA Prototype Hardware
The iPOINT switch and queue modules have been completely
prototyped using Xilinx
Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technologies.
By using reprogrammable logic, we can iteratively design the
ATM components without delays for chip fabrication.
iPOINT Switch
The iPOINT switch is implemented using a Xilinx XC4013pg223-5 FPGA.
The world view of this chip is as follows:
This device Provides:
- 800 Mbps of ATM switching bandwidth
Four 100 Mbps (8-bit) ports and one 400 Mbps (32-bit port)
- Diagnostic and Debugging Utilities (including internal ROM for test cell
generation)
- Switch Management Functions and cell counters (suitable for SNMP agent)
Stats:
- Number of I/O Pins utilized: 175 of 192
- Number of CLB Function Generators utilized: 1079 of 1152
- Longest Signal Delay: 73.5 ns
- Time Required to place and route circuit: 6 hours, 32 minutes
(using Sun SPARCStation 20/61)
iPOINT Queue Module
The iPOINT queue module is implemented using Xilinx XC4005 devices.
The world view of this chip is as follows:
FPGA Controller
To ease the programming of multiple FPGA devices, the
iPOINT FPGA Controller
was designed.
